【SHARE】How to perform fineness detection on ink

Fineness of ink is an important indicator directly related to the rheological properties and economic benefits of ink. Fineness generally refers to the degree to which solid powder substances such as pigments and fillers mixed in binders are dispersed. Ink that is too coarse can cause damage and paste during printing, and is not suitable for printing high-end printed products with finer mesh lines. Ink with the same pigment content has higher coloring power than ink with coarser fineness.
At present, the main method for detecting ink fineness in domestic enterprises is still the scraper fineness meter method. Taking offset printing ink as an example for explanation.
1. Testing principle
After diluting the ink according to the inspection method, the particle fineness and dispersion condition are measured by a scraper fineness meter, which is called ink fineness and expressed in micrometers.
2. Tools and materials
(1) A set of 10-50 μ m scraper fineness analyzer (2.5 μ m per scale).
(2) One 0.1mm ink suction tube.
(3) One acid burette (with a capacity of 25mL).
(4) Ink adjusting knife.
(5) Magnifying glass (5-20x)
(6) Oil No. 6 [viscosity (25 ℃) 140-160mPa · s].
(7) A glass panel.
3. Testing method
(1) Measure 0.5mL of the test ink using a 0.1mL pipette.
(2) Dilute with No. 6 oil according to the fluidity. Scope: Add 18 drops (or add 0.3mL per drop at 0.02mL) for flowability below 24mm; 25-35mm plus 14 drops (or 0.28mL); Add 10 drops (or 0.20mL) to 36-45mm; Do not add oil above 46mm.
(3) Pick up the diluted ink with an ink mixing knife and place it in the groove of the scraper fineness meter at a depth of 50 μ m. Place the scraper vertically and horizontally on the ink in the groove of the fineness meter, keep the scraper vertical, and use both hands to evenly scrape from top to bottom until it stops at the zero point, filling the groove of the scraper fineness meter with ink.
(4) After scraping, immediately tilt the surface of the fine analyzer towards the light source at a 30 ° angle and examine the particle density value with a 5-10 times magnifying glass. (If there are more than 15 particles within a scale range, count the scale value; if there are no more than 15 particles, count the scale value).
4. Precautions
(1) When diluting ink, it is necessary to adjust and not grind it forcefully to prevent dust from flying in.
(2) When holding the scraper horizontally with both hands, the force should not be too strong, and one side should not be too heavy. The ink on both sides of the fine plate groove must be scraped clean.
(3) The ink fineness test needs to be repeated 2-3 times, and the average value should be taken. If there is a difference of one scale, the test should be retested.
(4) After use, the ink suction tube and fineness meter must be wiped clean with a soft cloth or cotton yarn, and coated with grease to prevent corrosion.
(5) This method is only applicable to non solvent slurry inks.
